In Fullerton, the neighbourhood is the brief
Most Orange County cities were built in one or two pushes. Fullerton was built continuously for a century, and it kept the results side by side. That makes it the city where we ask which neighbourhood you are in before we ask anything else, because the answer settles most of the project.
Raymond Hills, Golden Hill and the streets around downtown are 1920s and 30s Spanish Revival and Craftsman. Arched cased openings, plaster that is nowhere near plumb, deep sills, original hardwood. These are custom cabinetry houses — cabinets scribed to the walls that exist rather than the walls a catalogue assumes, and inset doors, which sit right in a period house in a way overlay doors never quite do.
Sunny Hills is 1950s and 60s ranch on lots considerably larger than the county average. The kitchens are long, low and often dark, with a service door to the side and a soffit above the wall units. Two things fix them: bringing light in from the back of the house, which the deep lots make possible, and then refacing with the soffit removed so the cabinetry finally reaches the ceiling.
Amerige Heights and the later infill are already open-plan with sound builder-grade boxes. Painted doors, quartz and a full-height slab backsplash is the whole project, and it is a short one.
What does not change across the eras
Whichever decade your house is from, the sequencing is the same and it matters: layout before finishes, template after cabinetry is set, and flooring decided before the kitchen rather than after it. In older Fullerton homes with original hardwood, that last one is a real decision — refinishing what is there is often better than replacing it, and it has to be planned around the cabinet install rather than squeezed in afterwards.
Bathrooms in Fullerton
The period homes have small bathrooms with original tile, and the honest conversation is which parts can genuinely be preserved once the waterproofing is brought up to standard. The post-war tracts have compact hall bathrooms where layout and storage are the win. The newer homes want material and comfort. All three are bathroom remodeling projects, but they are not the same project.

Our 1930s kitchen has walls that are visibly out of square. Is stock cabinetry possible?
Rarely, and forcing it is how you end up with tapered filler strips down every run. Older Fullerton houses want custom cabinetry scribed to the walls as they actually are. It is not automatically more expensive, because you stop paying for filler and dead corners, and it fits.

Should we keep the arched openings?
Almost always. Arches are the strongest single piece of period character in a Raymond Hills or Golden Hill house, and squaring them off is the change clients most often regret. Cabinetry can be designed around an arch; an arch cannot be put back.

Our Sunny Hills kitchen is long and dark. What actually helps?
Light from the back of the house, usually. These lots are deep, and a wider opening or a bigger window at the rear does more for a long ranch kitchen than any amount of under-cabinet lighting. Then soffit removal and refacing to lift the room.

Is refacing worth it on a 1990s Amerige Heights kitchen?
Usually yes. The boxes are relatively young and the layout is already open, so replacing doors, drawer fronts and hardware and putting quartz over the top resets the room without touching the plan. It is the shortest project we run in Fullerton.
